The Revenge of Video Games!

Below is an article from the Feb. 20, 2006 issue of BusinessWeek. (The website only allows subscribers, like me, to view this online, so I pasted it below for your viewing pleasure.)

I tried the Kinkos game and it's hilarious! Rather difficult too. The website for that one is http://www.persuasivegames.com/games/game.aspx?game=disaffected.

I think I might go check out the McD's one next. Enjoy!

"Video Games Are The Best Revenge

The old adage is, never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. These days, Big Business also is learning not to antagonize video game designers. As Mitsubishi, McDonald's (MCD ), and FedEx (FDX ) Kinko's found out, they can get nasty and mock your product by making a game of it. Increasingly, the spoofs are popping up on the Web.

Software engineer Shawn McGough says he created Melting Mitsubishi after the paint on his new Mitsubishi Lancer wore away just months after purchase. Players must zap raindrops and spinning Mitsubishi logos away from a yellow Lancer before its paint melts off. In an anti-McDonald's game created by Molleindustria, an Italian company specializing in games for activists, players switch back and forth between a McDonald's farm, feedlot, restaurant, and headquarters. Players can boost their score by fattening cows with hormones and firing inefficient workers, hitting on themes familiar to critics of Big Food. If profits dip, an evil-looking Ronald McDonald admonishes: "Shame on you, you bankrupted the company!"

In Disaffected! from Persuasive Games, players staff a Kinko's counter. Employees have one mode, indifferent, as they grunt, confuse orders, or refuse to work. The game ends when irate customers exit without paying. More than 50,000 people have downloaded Disaffected! since its debut in mid-January, says designer Ian Bogost. But it may have an unintended effect. "It made me appreciate what [Kinko's] employees must go through," noted one player on gaming blog Joystiq.com. Kinko's says it takes "strong exception" to the characterization. Mitsubishi declined to comment; McDonald's had no response.

Ok, crappy picture, but here's what I did this weekend. A "Potato Chip" Ruffled Scarf and a Tam (aka hat) both out of Moda Dea - Dream (a composite yarn of chenille and acrylic fluff... very, very soft!). Posted by Picasa

License Plates...

So, I finally got my license plates for my car. They're the ugly yellow ones, and the number is, well, boring. So, I think I might get personalized plates. But, I need ideas! I've got a few, and some of them are even available. *surprised* But I still am not sure I've come up with the perfect one.

So, here's where you come in. Anyone who comments on this blog with a good idea for my plates will get a big round of applause! And if I end up picking one of the ideas, then that person gets an even bigger round of applause and a hug the next time I see them. ;)

If you want to test your ideas to see if they are actually available, here's the site: https://webapp.state.ak.us/dmv/akplate.jsp.

So let the games begin!

New Car Pics!

My new car!!! I finally got it washed... not that it did a lot of good in reality, but it looks clean in the picture! It's a 2006 Honda Civic LX, and I've had it about 2 weeks now. Posted by Picasa
Here's my new car again, with my apartment as a backdrop. My apartment is on the 2nd floor to the right. The window is half cut off, and the door is hidden behind the stairs. I'll post pictures of the inside of it when I have a bit more decorating done. It's a bit bland right now. ;) Posted by Picasa

Must blog...

It's been too long since I've blogged regularly. Of course, I'll be surprised if I actually start blogging as regularly again anytime soon, but this one is a start I suppose.

Let's see... what have I been up to...

Working out in the mornings at 5:30 a.m. Linda, one of the managers at work, got me started on this one, and it feels so good! I got a membership to Alaska Club and have been going Mon, Wed, and Fri mornings. I might increase that at some point, but it's good for now. Of course it means my normal bedtime now is at 9 p.m.

Work has been going quite well. I'm on 50 hours a week, which really isn't too bad. I start every day at 7:30 a.m. and if there's are no business lunches, or other things to disrupt my day, I'm done by 5:30 p.m. with 10 hours done that day. And if I ever manage to maintain that schedule over the course of a week, then I won't have to go to work Saturday. We'll see if that ever happens though. ;) Working for a few hours on Saturday isn't really so bad though. As long as it's not too long.

Dancing! Megan was in town this weekend and we had a blast!!! The West Coast Swing Alaska group had a dance at the Fred Astaire ballroom that we went to for awhile. Then at 11 p.m. we headed over to Club Soraya, which was just hitting full swing. We didn't end up leaving there until they were turning the lights on and signaling it was time to go home! (At almost 3 a.m.)

My new car is still awesome! I'm so happy with it. It needs a wash though. The roads around here are not good for keeping a car clean... especially when it's been above freezing every day since last Monday.

John and I will have been officially dating for 1 year tomorrow!!! That makes this my second longest relationship, with only about another month to go to make it my longest. And I sincerely hope this one never ends. Well, except to maybe switch from dating to something a bit more official sounding. But not yet. That time will come. In the meantime, I'm working and he's finishing school.

Speaking of tomorrow... I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day! May all your dreams and wishes come true! (If not immediately, than sometime in the future at least.)

Back online!

Hey everyone, I finally have internet at home now. So you will probably see me on MSN a bit more often, at least when I'm not at work or doing something else.

I'm getting hungry, so I'm not gonna write much right now, but there is one piece of news you all might be interested in reading: I bought a new car just a couple days ago! It's a 2006 Honda Civic LX in silver with grey interior. It's friggin' gorgeous! And I talked them down to a decent price too. I'm so happy!

Ok, that's all for now. Dinner and then I'm off to Club Soraya! I haven't been dancing in far, far, far too long.
